  • 0 - 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds – equal to a manual BMW M3 Coupe
  • Straight-six twin-turbo engine with increased output to 250 kW and peak torque of 500 Nm
  • Seven-speed Sports Automatic transmission with double clutch operation
  • Standard M Sport package offering aerodynamics kit, adaptive M suspension and 18” wheel alloys

BMW Australia has announced the local arrival of the high-performance BMW Z4 sDrive35is, being the fourth, range-topping engine variant in the BMW roadster range.

The BMW Z4 sDrive35is features a modified straight-six, Twin Turbo engine, coupled with BMW’s seven speed automatic transmission with double clutch operation. A unique M Sports Package including adaptive M Suspension, completes the high performance offering.

BMW Group Australia managing director, Stavros Yallouridis, said the new roadster would extend demand for the BMW Z4 which was released locally in May 2009.

“The Z4 is already recognised as a design icon and a triumph of engineering, leading its market segment in terms of global sales,” said Mr Yallouridis.

“Now in the form of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is, Australian performance enthusiasts can enjoy the ultimate BMW roadster experience,” he said.

The BMW Z4 sDrive35is features a modified straight-six twin turbo engine with high precision injection technology with an output of 250 kW. Accelerating from standstill to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds, the roadster’s performance time is identical to the six-speed manual BMW M3 Coupé. Peak torque is 450 Nm, increasing briefly to 500 Newton-metres courtesy of an overboost function.

The new model for the Z4 range is fitted with BMW’s seven-speed Double Clutch Transmission which includes a launch control function.

The unique M Sport Package features a particularly aggressive-looking aerodynamics kit and includes adaptive suspension which lowers the car by 10 millimetres.

An exclusive 18” Star-Spoke option is also now standard. And unique floormats, embroided with the BMW Z4 sDrive35is model-designation, complete the sporting appeal of the range-topping roadster.

Despite increased performance, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are identical to that of the 225 kW Z4 sDrive35i, exemplifying the BMW EfficientDynamics ethos of reducing emissions whilst improving performance.

The roadster is also equipped standard with BMW EfficientDynamics technologies such as Brake Energy Regeneration and Electric Power Steering.

The new BMW Z4 sDrive35is is available now in Australian BMW showrooms.

Priced from $129,900* the BMW Z4 sDrive35is sits atop the current Z4 range, which consists of the Z4 sDrive23i, the Z4 sDrive30i and the Z4 sDrive35i.

More air, more power

The BMW Twin Turbopower power unit uses two small turbochargers which through their low inertia, cut in immediately at low engine speeds, each supplying three cylinders with compressed air. As a result, power and performance are built up with a level of spontaneity not usually experienced on a turbocharged engine. The turbocharger system developed for the Z4 sDrive35is maintains a high boost pressure throughout the entire load range. Peak torque now hits a high of 450 Nm at a low 1,500 rpm and is maintained consistently right up to 4,500 rpm. Maximum output of 250 kW is delivered at 5,900 rpm.

An overboost function lifting torque to 500 Nm allows for a surge of acceleration and power which sprints the Z4 sDrive35is from standstill to 100 km/h in a mere 4.8 seconds, equaling the manual BMW M3 Coupe.

High-precision injection

High power output and performance has never equaled an increase in consumption and emissions at BMW, and the Z4 sDrive35is exemplifies this principal. Averaging fuel consumption of 9.0litres per 100 km, the new Roadster emits just 210 grammes of CO2 per kilometer in the EU test cycle, equal to the Z4 sDrive35i.

Combining the design and layout of the six-cylinder engine using BMW Twin Turbo Technology and High Precision Injection, the qualities of direct injection allow for very precise delivery of fuel and a clean combustion process.

Likewise the steel turbines are designed for maximum resistance to high temperatures, of up to 1,000 degrees Celsius, thereby reducing the need for an increased fuel supply with its cooling effect. Under a full load, this means significant advantages in fuel economy.

Furthermore, BMW EfficientDynamics technologies such as Brake Energy Generation, Electric Power Steering and High Precision Injection ensure the vehicle’s ability to reduce consumption and emissions is exploited.

Extraordinary specification, now featured as standard

Standard specification is enhanced on the Z4 sDrive35is which gains exclusive 18” light alloy wheels in Star-Spoke styling, Double Clutch Transmission, Adaptive M suspension, floor mats with unique sDrive35is designation and a characteristically sporty M Sport Package.

The M Sport Package emphasises the aggressive and dynamic performance of this vehicle, and includes Aluminium Carbon interior trim finisher, M leather steering wheel, the M aerodynamic package and BMW roofliner Anthracite. Even the exhaust system featured on the Z4 sDrive35is has been developed specifically for this model, to deliver an appropriately deep and powerful engine sound.

Adaptive M suspension can lower the vehicle by up to 10 millimetres, ensuring a quick reaction to sudden steering commands and stable entry into bends, whilst the suspension set up allows for Damper stiffness to be fluid enough to deal with current conditions and driving requirements. The reaction time of the system is extremely short, with the rear dampers being adjusted immediately as soon as the front wheels run over a hole or bump in the road.
