Audi Australia has launched its five door A1 model range with a brand new
1.2 litre engine, offering exceptional value for entry into the premium Audi range.
Starting from just $26,500* (MLP*), the all new Audi A1 Sportback 1.2 TFSI Attraction offers 63 kW of power, 160 Nm of
torque, a manual transmission and excellent fuel economy, plus the versatility of five doors.
The new Audi A1 Sportback range also offers customers the choice of a frugal 1.6 TDI engine with 66 kW and consumption
of just 3.8 ltres/100 km for the manual variant, or a 1.4 TFSI petrol engine with 90 kW and 200 Nm of torque with a
still-low consumption of 5.4 litres/100 km. Fuel consumption figures based on the "combined cycle" rating.
The 1.4 TFSI ‘Sport’ engine rounds out the A1 Sportback range, offering a punchy 136 kW and 250 Nm of torque with a 0 –
100 km/h sprint time of 7.0 seconds. Consumption remains below 6.0 l/100 km (combined cycle).
All A1 Sportback models are entering the market at the same basic price point of the three door variants, making this
latest model exceptional value for customers wanting to join the steadily-growing Audi family.
The success of the A1 3-door model in Australia is a good indication of the potential for the Sportback model, says
Audi’s Managing Director, Uwe Hagen.
“The A1 has introduced an entirely new group of customers to the Audi brand, and we’re currently in the lead in the
segment after 18 months of sales. The progressive new Sportback variant is expected to find favour with Australian buyers
thanks to the versatility of easy access to the rear seats as an additional feature of a great compact premium
vehicle,” Mr Hagen said.
“The Audi A1 range represents important volume potential for Audi in Australia,” he added.
The new A1 Sportback is characterised by the progressive design that is inherent to the Audi range. It’s an urban
vehicle with a dynamic 'heart' and a strong appeal to buyers looking for premium 'DNA' in a compact package. It clearly
carries the genes of its larger siblings, along with assistance systems and options from the luxury class, proving that a
small car needn’t mean a compromise on quality or comfort. Thanks to two additional doors and a handy luggage space of up
to 920 litres with rear seats folded down, The A1 Sportback is well-suited to everyday driving.
The front-wheel drive A1 5-door range is also economical. Every model offers fuel consumption of below 6.0 litres/100
km, with Start/Stop technology as standard across most variants. It is also extremely safe thanks to a rigid bodyshell,
six full-sized airbags and ESP with cross-axle locking system, resulting in a 5-star EURO NCAP safety rating.
Two trim levels are available for the mainstream market – Attraction for versatility and Ambition for comfort. All
models feature a 6.5-inch folding screen, Bluetooth interface and music streaming capabilities, cruise control, Concert
radio with 8 speakers, Driver Information System, dynamic suspension, a light and rain sensor and a multi-function
leather sports steering wheel. Audi also offer the A1 Sportback 1.4 TFSI Sport with 7-speed S tronic transmission for
those seeking a sporty presentation.
The new Audi A1 Sportback is available in 12 exterior paint colours, 3 contrasting roof dome options, contrasting air
vents and Audi exclusive and Audi exclusive line customisation packages.
The Audi A1 Sportback is intended to appeal to young urban professionals, young families and as a second vehicle for
the family.
Measuring 3.95 metres in length, the Audi A1 Sportback is the compact A1 Sportback for a young, urban public. Its
design identifies it as a member of the large Audi family. The front is dominated by the single-frame grille with the
beveled upper corners. If the headlights are equipped with the optional Xenon plus lights, LEDs are used for the daytime
running lights. The sculpted tail lights are also equipped with light-emitting diodes in this case.
The engine bonnet and the rear hatch wrap around the body, the shoulder line encircles the entire car and the flowing
roof with its integrated spoiler transitions to a steeply sloped C-pillar. A contrasting roof line is optionally available
in one of three colours.
High- and ultra high-strength steels comprise roughly two-thirds of the A1 Sportback’s body. With its strict adherence
to lightweight construction, the body lays the groundwork for the low gross weight – equipped with the 1.2 TFSI engine,
the five-door model tips the scales at just 1,065 kilogrammes. The body’s rigidity, high level of safety and acoustic
comfort provide for the composed, sportily precise feeling of the A1 Sportback.
Interior, equipment and infotainment
The interior of the A1 Sportback is spacious, bright and airy. With its stepped front, the instrument panel resembles
an airplane wing; the round air vents bear hints of jet engines. The center console is inclined slightly toward the
driver; the console on the center tunnel has similarities with the rear of a sailing yacht.
The roof of the A1 Sportback extends farther back than in the three-door model, providing 11 millimetres more rear
seat headroom. It comes standard with five seats, although the optional sunroof requires deletion of the fifth seat.
The clean, clear controls and excellent workmanship are classic Audi strengths. Many carefully designed details
document the premium character of the A1 Sportback, while fresh colours emphasise its youthfulness. Whether coloured air
vent sleeves or fine leather upholstery, customers have countless possibilities for customising the car to reflect their
individual taste.
The range of infotainment and multimedia systems, topped by MMI navigation plus, sets standards in this segment. The
high-end system features a hard disc, the MMI operating principle, a DVD drive and intelligent voice control. The
monitor, which folds out from the instrument panel, displays three-dimensional graphics in high resolution. The 465 watt
Bose surround sound system is just one example of the high-end complementary modules available from Audi.
Drivetrain
The Audi A1 Sportback is available with a choice of four four-cylinder engines: one TDI and three TFSI units. Their
performance range extends from 63 kW to 136 kW. All of the engines follow the downsizing principle – they substitute
turbocharging for displacement and draw their fuel through direct injection units. All except the 1.6 TDI with S tronic
and the top-of-the-line petrol engine are equipped with a start-stop system.
Regardless of the engine, the A1 Sportback is impressively efficient. For example, the 1.6 TDI paired with a manual
transmission consumes on average just 3.8 litres of diesel fuel per 100 km, corresponding to 99 grammes CO2 per km. When
equipped with the S tronic, these figures are 4.2 litres and 110 grammes per km, respectively. A new, sophisticated
temperature management system in the 1.2 TFSI contributes to the low fuel consumption of 5.1 litres per 100 km.
The transmission of power to the wheels underscores the leading role that the A1 Sportback occupies in its segment.
The manual five-speed transmission offers a combination of sportiness and efficiency. The seven-speed S tronic is
available for the 1.4 TFSI with 90 kW and the 1.6 TDI with 66 kW; it comes standard with the top TFSI model with 136 kW.
The dual-clutch transmission shifts smoothly, extremely quickly and with no perceptible interruption to the flow of
power. The driver can let the S tronic shift automatically or control it manually.
Chassis
The dynamic chassis rounds out the agile character of the A1 Sportback. The front suspension is a McPherson
construction; a torsion beam axle is used in the back. The weight distribution harmonises perfectly with the front-wheel
drive system. The electrohydraulic steering system features a very direct steering ratio of 14.8:1. The set up with the
Ambition line is sportily taut; the sport suspension provides for even more dynamic handling.
Depending on the trim line, engine and option chosen by the customer, the wheels measure between 15, 16 and 17 inches
in diameter. Eighteen-inch wheels are available from quattro GmbH. The front brake discs are internally ventilated. The
standard ESP stabilisation programme with electronic limited slip differential makes the handling even more precise while
also enhancing driving safety. It minimises understeer at the limit by braking the inside front wheel slightly, which
also improves traction.
