Great Day for The Great Ocean Road
22nd November, 2007 | |||
There will be something for everyone at the ‘flag away’ of the VACC 75 Years Great Ocean Road Celebration Tour. For the motoring enthusiast, 40 vintage cars will re-enact the original opening tour of 1932, covering 450 kilometres from Melbourne to Portland over the four days of the tour. For others, nostalgia will be in the air as the vehicles of yesteryear, all pre-1933, celebrate the history of Victoria’s greatest and most-spectacular scenic road, and the communities along its route. Construction of the Great Ocean Road first started in September 1919 when the Premier of Victoria, Sir Harry Lawson detonated an explosive charge near Lorne. Built by 3,000 returned soldiers from World War One, the road was completed in 1932, joining at Apollo Bay with Country Roads Board sections to extend all the way to Warrnambool. Sponsored by VACC and with proceeds to Retina Australia Victoria, the VACC Great Ocean Road 75 Years Celebration Tour departs the Automotive Centre of Excellence, Docklands, at 11 am on Sunday 25th November, 2007. The Victorian Minister for Roads, Mr Tim Pallas, will flag away the cavalcade. The Fox Classic car Collection will also be open to visitors. |
