26th July, 2006 Gawler Veteran, Vintage & Classic Vehicle Club on DisplaySunday, 16th July 2006 saw the opening of a display by the Gawler Veteran, Vintage & Classic Vehicle Club at the National Motor Museum in Birdwood, South Australia. The display is in the Museum’s ‘Club Space’ - a specially designated area in which clubs and other organisations are given the opportunity to tell the story of their members vehicles. The Gawler Veteran, Vintage & Classic Vehicles Club Inc. was founded in March 1984 at a meeting of twenty three enthusiasts and their first Run was held in July 1984. They arrange monthly Runs with a family emphasis, have a bi- monthly magazine 'The Journal', a Club Annual Dinner, a Christmas Picnic and a June Long Weekend Rally. Their main activity each year is the Gawler Swap Meet which is now the largest in SA. The Club has steadily grown, and at present has approximately 240 member families who between them own hundreds of vehicles. As members collect a wide variety of vehicles there is interest by members in most marques rather than a focus on just one make. This factor helps to make the Club focus on people enjoying their vehicles and sharing this enjoyment with others, having fun with their vehicles in the company of good friends. Club Events Director, Trevor Bellchambers says: "The main emphasis of the club is to bring collectable vehicle enthusiasts together, to encourage each other to restore and enjoy using our vehicles, and to enjoy the company of Members." On show at the National Motor Museum until 14th October 2006, the Club’s display includes an interesting cross section of vehicles: 1953 Holden Sedan (FJ series) 1925 Willys Overland Tourer 1927 Oldsmobile Tourer 1938 Morris 8 series II Utility The 1938 Morris has an interesting story behind it. Ordered on 21st May 1938 in chassis form from the Cowley Works in the U.K. by Motors Ltd. and shipped to Adelaide on S.S. 'Waipawa' from the U.K. on 4th July 1938. The 'Ruskin' body No. 1976 was ordered from Victoria at a cost of £49 odd plus £1/2/6 freight charge. The body was then fitted to the chassis on 6th September 1938 with its original colour of Beige with Fawn trim. The vehicles final delivery date was 20th October 1938 and its first owner was Mr R. W. Mattner from Tanunda. The vehicle tied for first place in the car section of 'The Advertiser 24 Hour Endurance Contest' on the 12th June 1939.
