Australia's new vehicle market has, once again, performed very well with
1,008,437 new vehicles sold across the nation in 2011. This is the fourth time Australians have acquired over one
million vehicles in a single calendar year.
VFACTS data released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) confirmed the 2011 result.
The figure represent a small decrease in volume (2.6 per cent or 27,137 fewer sales) compared with 2010. The FCAI
had a forecast of 1,050,000 units for the year.
Sales results
Once again, Toyota was the best selling vehicle brand in 2011, with 181,624 sales for a market share of 18 per cent.
No other brand has ever sold this many vehicles in a calendar year previously.

Ford came in third with 91,243 sales (nine per cent).
The small car, Luxury SUV and 4x4 light commercial segments led the sales charge throughout 2011, growing by 2.1,
22.4 and 6.3 per cent respectively.
Looking forward
FCAI's Chief Executive, Ian Chalmers said the FCAI’s outlook for 2012 was cautiously optimistic and they have
predicted the market to top one million sales again in 2012. He also indicated local manufacturers will be seeking
taxpayer funding in 2012.
Global sales
The team at Next Car are expecting total global sales of new vehicles will exceed 70 million units. This will
take the total number of vehicles on the road, across the globe, to approximately 900 million vehicles.
