Vehicles at Wings & Wheels at the Moorabbin Air Museum

Always well worthy of a visit is the Australian National Aviation Museum, also known as the Moorabbin Air Museum,
located at the Moorabbin airport in suburban Melbourne (Victoria). The museum features static displays of many aspects of general, agricultural, commercial and military aviation. Amidst the display area is a superb restoration of a Bristol Beaufighter. It's in a hanger amongst numerous other aircraft.
Outside sits a de Havilland Heron, amongst other unrestored aircraft. Each year the Museum features a fund raising display of historic cars, which are parked amongst the aircraft. The event,
known as Wings & Wheels was held this weekend. The Next Car team called in for a visit. Just a couple of dozen vehicles were on display. Some of them are shown
on this page. If ever there is a Triumph TR4 (or a TR2, TR3, TR5 or TR6 for that matter) on display it is almost guaranteed that I will photograph
it. And so it was today, when one of my all-time favourites was 'spotted'. A real treat at the Museum is the attentive volunteers who are very willing to discuss matters regarding the many displays, be
it aviation or automotive. During my hour or so at the museum, I discovered that the 1933 MG on display was a participant in the 1933 Mille Miglia. It was
driven by Sir Henry Birkin, one of the Bentley Boys, and co-driven by Bernard Rubin. The car has a 1,087 cc supercharged engine and
features gear pre-selection mechanism. It is shown here parked in front of the restored Beaufighter. (click any image for a larger and clearer view)
